Responding to the Syllabus: Course Goals and Projects

The “Course Goals” are always important for any academic class since it gives students a look what they will get from the class. After reading out “Course Goals”, the two goals that stood out for me the most was the first and third goals.

First goal states that students will learn how to produce texts in different form of technologies that are not just limited to the usual forms like blogs, email and texting. The third goal puts those texts in to the context of how it will be interpreted by the readers when circulated despite how the text has been structured to appear.

I definitely need to work on the first goal. Due to the rise and influence of digital age, communications has been changed, orally and written form. Today, people wants things fast and accessible. I definitely need to work on how I can balance on how to get information out in a fast and accessible manner.

The projects that are expected from students definitely will help me work on the “Course Goals”. The project that interests me the most is the design document for a narrative video game; however, the project that interests me the least is the online paper where it combines words and pictures to make an argument about an aspect on how young people’s used network writing technology. I believe I will the most prepared for the first project, which is to make guidelines for ethical representations of others in print and online texts. Though my journalism studies, I feel like I am already acquainted with media and ethics that I will feel comfortable discussing it in the class.

Despite the course being online, due dates and attendance will be treated like the class is being taught at an academic hall in Milwaukee. No assignments are to be handed late, and participation  in class online discussions will be equivalent to being active and present in class.

If students have any questions or concerns, Professor Wysocki will be available to chat during her “virtual office hours” on Mondays from noon to 2pm. The hour work for me as only from 12pm to 1pm since I log in to my online writing job at 1pm. If possible I can chat earlier than 12pm since I am more available in the morning. Office Hours are great to ask questions, especially when I need advice or suggestions on how to work on the projects. The kind of help or discussion that will be useful me would be providing critical analysis of my work as well as pointing out what I need to work on. I will definitely plan on my first “visit” soon, especially when the first project is nearing.

For me, I think the teacher’s responsibilities in the class are to be provide a non-bias, insightful response, to act as a provider of resources tools such as sharing links to where students can learn more about what they seeks and to just be available online. In return, my responsibilities as as student is to give the class my full attention and respect. This means, I will be doing the assignments at my full capacity, following guidelines and being open to accepting feedback as well as sharing my feeback. I think being on top of assignments like reading your materials will allow me to become the most active, responsible learner in this class.

After I have read the syllabus, I hope to further my knowledge in digital technology as well as writing in the digital age. I also hope to gain critical thinking skills when it comes to digital work. Although I have background in online writing from my blogging experience, I feel like there’s a lot I can learn from the class. However, it is my experience in online writing that I think will be most useful to my fellow classmates since I can offer insights from my experience and hopefully they can learn from it. At the same time, I think hearing insightful opinions and feedback from my classmates will let me look at my work in an analytical way.

Although this is an introduction class, I feel like it’s a class where I will be fully immersed in all aspects of the topic in focus as seen from all the webpages. Because the calendar has provided detailed instruction for the next few weeks, the only thing I find amorphous is the Final Project but I feel with more details revealed about it, I have no doubt I can take on the project seamlessly.

The projects are of course what makes me nervous as I feel it will need a lot of time to finish. I have a busy schedule for the semester since I have my classes, part-time work and internship so I do need to find the time to invest on the class each week, which is what I need to do I can push myself to do my best. However, I think my experience in digital writing will help me a lot in the class. I do think the projects will give the most pleasure especially if I’m going to be developing new skills or knowledge on digital technologies.

In conclusion, I will make sure to set aside at least two hours each day and possibly more on the days I not at my internship. The weekends will also be the time I will use to work on class assignments and projects. I do know from past online courses I have taken that for me to keep interested is that I feel like I’m getting insightful feedback and discussions in the class. I have had a class last semester where I didn’t feel I was interacting with my classmates or the instructor was present for me, and I just lost interest in the class. However, I feel like this won’t be the case for the class so I look forward to it.
